The Sport

The International Table Tennis Federation has 147 member countires, the largest amongst racquet sports and for participation, table tennis is within the top five of all sports worldwide

Table Tennis is an Olympic event and was included in the Seoul (1988), Barcelona (1992), and Atlanta (1996) Games.

In Europe and Asia, professional leagues exist and attract players from all over the world. Athletes train 40 hours per week much like a regular job. Canada's Johnny Huang currently plays professionally in Japan.

In Canada, the sport centres around clubs and schools through the support of provincial and national assciations. Competitive table tennis can be found at local, provincial and regional tournaments.

The top players attending the Canadian Championships practice 15 to 20 hours per week and most take advantage of provincial and national training centres for professional coaching and fitness programs.

Competitive table tennis requires incredible hand-eye coordination, skill, and athletic ability. This, combined with many years of experience can develop the tools required to compete at the national level. Many of the players attending the Canadian Championships started playing in tournaments before the age of eight. The sport appeals to a large audience as players can be any gender or age to participate.
